AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Studentship 2008-2011
The Centre for Contemporary British History (CCBH) and the Rothschild Archive have been awarded a Collaborative Doctoral Award to fund three doctoral students. The first student began work in October 2008, the second in October 2009, and we are now offering a third studentship to start in October 2010.

The doctorate will be supervised by Professor Richard Roberts, Director of the CCBH, and will be based primarily on the archives of the Rothschild Archive. The CCBH and Rothschild Archive invite applications from potential doctoral students.

For two centuries the merchant bank N M Rothschild & Sons has been one of the City's leading firms and the Rothschilds a prominent British family. The papers of the firm that have now been catalogued and are available to scholars span from the early 19th century to 1939. The holdings of the Rothschild Archive provide the basis for a host of doctoral studies, including:

• Rothschild networks: the business of family
• Rothschilds and the crisis of the interwar years
• Rothschild conformity and non-conformity

Professor Roberts is an expert on financial history, particularly the development of merchant banking and the City of London, in which the Rothschild firm and family feature prominently. The Rothschild Archive provides an unrivalled resource for exploring many significant topics in financial history, such as the development of London's financial markets and the City's international and domestic connections.
Guidance regarding the holdings of The Rothschild Archive may be viewed at: www.rothschildarchive.org.

Potential doctoral projects should avoid duplication of work covered in the recent AHRC-funded project "Jewish Philanthropy and Social Development in Europe 1800-1940". Applicants may be interested in consulting Niall Ferguson, The World's Banker: The History of the House of Rothschild (London, 1998).

The CCBH is located at the University of London in central London, and the Rothschild Archive at Bank is in the City of London. For further information and to discuss a research proposal contact: Professor Richard Roberts - Richard.roberts@sas.ac.uk Melanie Aspey, Director, The Rothschild Archive - melanie.aspey@rothschild.co.uk. They will give you guidance on suitable projects, the availability of archives and how to apply.

Applicants will normally be expected to have or be completing a Masters degree in a relevant discipline. Applications will close at 5pm on Friday 11 June. Interviews will take place if necessary on Thursday 17 June. Please give yourself plenty of time to discuss your proposal and apply before that date.

Please note that awards will be made subject to AHRC eligibility rules - see here for details (link goes to a pdf file). In general, UK residents are eligible for full grants, EU residents for fees-only awards, and overseas students are not eligible. However, please read the guide for detailed advice and if necessary contact Virginia Preston (virginia.preston@sas.ac.uk) to discuss it.
