Facilites for MA students

In addition to the programme of courses, students have access to the outstanding library of the Institute of Historical Research (IHR), to its training courses in historical methods, sources and historiography, its computer facilities and its unrivalled programme of research seminars to which leading historians from throughout the world contribute regularly.

The course is based at the Centre for Contemporary British History (CCBH). Formerly known as the Institute of Contemporary British History (ICBH), CCBH has been part of the IHR since 1999. 		 
Since it was founded in 1986 it has built up an enviable range of experience in the study of contemporary British history, and of contacts among historians and those who make history. Among other activities, it produces a unique programme of ‘spoken contemporary history’ (or ‘witness seminars’), in which participants in historically important events in the past fifty years record their recollections and analysis of those events, producing an unrivalled collection of source material. Students on the course will be able to participate in the creation of this archive. The CCBH is also involved in producing textbooks and academic books, in running conferences and in developing the internet as a resource for historians. Students will be able to participate in CCBH conferences and workshops, such as the annual Summer Conference — in 2009 the theme is Britain and the End of the Cold War’ — which brings together established historians and graduate students..

Students will also have access to research seminars and libraries of other research/ postgraduate institutes of the School of Advanced Study of the University of London, including the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Institute of for the Study of the Americas, Institute of English Studies. Also to the University of London library and the University of London Students Union, both of which are located close to the Institute of Historical Research.
